A medieval melody by Beatriz, Comtessa de Dia (The Countess of Dia) written in about 1180. Beatriz was a female troubadour (called a troubaritz) who lived in the South of France.
CAN VEI LA LAUZETA (When I see the lark ascending)
A melody to a medieval song written around 1180 by the troubadour Bernart de Ventadorn, played on an oud.
DANSE ROYALE (Anon 13th Century French)
Played on a copy of a medieval Guitarra Latina (Latin Guitar). Both the instrument and the tune date from about 1260.
The instrument is based on the one shown in an illustration in the manuscript of the Cantigas de Santa Maria (shown at the start of the film), a Spanish manuscript from 1260, and it was made by Marcelo García Morillo. It is tuned d a d a and has tied nylon frets.
